Gearing Up to Podcast

by Tommy G. Kendrick

The process of getting this new podcast together is moving along nicely. All the equipment necessary, and more, is in place.

Fortunately, since I occasionally do voice overs, I’ve had decent recording equipment for some time.  I’ve had the popular Heil PR40 for awhile now, along with a nice little collection of condenser mics that are at least serviceable.  Because I don’t have a proper studio space at home, recording with a condenser mic comes with too many issues : AC, refrigerators, family members moving about, etc.

So I’ve switched to recording at home with the PR40 and the frustration level I was experiencing has diminished greatly. Once I added the very inexpensive Behringer MDX4600 compressor/limiter/gate most of the lingering sound issues I was having were resolved…at least to my present satisfaction. I realize the sound will not be perfect, but I think it will be very good.

Zed 14Mixer and Heil PR40 Mic - Getting Ready to Podcast

I guess I should run down the list of all the equipment that will be directly used for the podcast:

  • Heil PR40
  • Heil SM-2B Shockmount
  • Heil PL-2T Boom Arm
  • Allen&Heath Zed 14 Mixer
  • Behringer MDX4600
  • Zoom H2 Digital Voice Recorder
  • KRK Rokit5 Monitor
  • Sony MDR-7506 Headphones
  • iPhone 3G
  • Acer Aspire One Netbook

That’s a nice setup equipment wise and I have no worries there. I threw the old iPhone onto the list because I may be using it to play some music cues or I may just use my little Acer netbook for that purpose. See…still have some decisions to make along the way.

I’ve been greatly aided in this process with information gleaned from some really excellent web resources, particularly the Podcast Answer Man site. I’m still in the process of designing this web site and trying to get up to speed on using Skype to bring in some actors and other industry friends for interviews. I’m also still learning the ropes with my Allen & Heath mixer, but I’m very satisfied in the choice I made there as an upgrade from my little old Behringer 602A.

Paying work calls, so that’s enough of what is now officially Blog Post 1 for Actors Talk : Acting. See you soon!
